Ken Mann is currently serving his 2nd term on the Whatcom County Council. His 1st term began January 2010. In 2016, Councilmember Mann is a member of the Finance and Administrative Services Committee and the Public Works, Health, and Safety Committee. In addition, he is appointed to several community boards and committees, including the Developmental Disabilities Board, Incarceration Prevention & Reduction Task Force, Law Enforcement Officers' and Fire Fighters' (LEOFF) Board, and North Sound Mental Health Administration Board.
Ken and his wife, Amy, moved to Whatcom County after he was recruited by a local engineering firm in the winter of 2000. In late 2003, Ken and Amy decided to form their own real estate development and property management companies. They specialize in the restoration of older buildings within existing urban areas. Their most notable project has been the renovation of the Hinsdale Hardware Building and the Northwest Grocery Company building on Commercial Street in Bellingham (formerly La Pinata and currently home to the Irish Pub known as "Uisce" and popular restaurant “Brandywine Kitchen”). Between 2008 and 2009, Ken hosted a radio talk show on KGMI with Jacqueline Cartier. Before moving west, Ken worked on Wall Street as an equities trader.
In addition to his Council duties, Ken is active with Ski to Sea, the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (DVSAS), and the Whatcom Humane Society.
Ken attended Tulane University and graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1992. He returned to school at Carnegie Mellon University and received a Civil Engineering degree in 2001.
Ken and Amy attended middle school together, reconnected after college, and have now been married for 11+ years. In August 2010, they welcomed their first child - Atticus. In June of 2012, they were blessed with their second child, a beautiful baby girl - Phoebe. Their home is further enlivened by their 2 rescue dogs, Max and Pata, and a continuous stream of neighborhood kids.
Ken is an avid mountain biker, hiker, and outdoorsman and loves camping in the mountains. He has also been known to throw darts, play chess, and lose to Amy at Scrabble. He enjoys playing his guitar, watching good movies and driving his 1968 GMC pickup. His ideal evening includes a barbecue at a friend's house, with lots of good food and big laughs.
