E Smith Rd & Hannegan Rd Intersection Improvements

E. Smith.Hannegan Map

Project Update on January 28, 2019

Whatcom County Public Works has executed a final design contract with our consultant, Transpo, and started design of the multi-lane roundabout improvement for the intersection. As part of the initial data gathering process for starting this design we are going to be doing some geotechnical exploration work at the intersection. This work will require a partial closure of the intersection on Monday, February 4, 2019, from approximately 8 AM to 4 PM. This partial closure of the intersection will require lane closures in and around the intersection, as well as turning the signal to flashing red in all directions. We expect there to be significant delays due to the traffic volumes on both Smith and Hannegan. Public Works recommends using alternate routes on February 4, 2019 to avoid the E.Smith/Hannegan Intersection.

In the weeks and months ahead, you will see Public Works staff on-site gathering additional information about the location that will assist in the design. Construction is currently planned for the Summer of 2021.

The intersection of East Smith and Hannegan Roads is located in Sections 28, 29, 32 and 33, T39N, R3E. This intersection currently experiences delays due to the lack of left-turn channelization on Smith Road. Proposed improvements would address operation and efficiency of the entire intersection.
