Project Summary

Whatcom County Public Works plans to replace the failing 30-inch concrete fish barrier culvert with a 10-foot diameter culvert meeting current fish passage standards. 

Project Timeline:

  • Summer 2022 – Construction of permanent culvert replacement
  • Spring 2022 – ROW and Final Design Complete
  • Spring 2021 – Permitting complete
  • 2020 - 2021 – Begin detailed design, permitting, and ROW phases
  • 2019 – Preliminary engineering analysis for permanent repair project
  • Summer 2018 – Temporary culvert and roadway embankment repair
  • Spring 2018 – Failure of culvert outlet and roadway embankment

Traffic Impacts

Mosquito Lake Road will be closed at the project site for the duration of the construction.  A detour utilizing the Mt. Baker Highway (SR-542) and Highway 9 (SR-9) will be in place during the road closure. Construction is anticipated to begin August 2022 and wrap up in early September 2022.
