WCHD Immunization Contest

The Whatcom County Health Department is hosting a creative immunization contest for children preK to Grade 12. The contest is broken up into 4 categories based on grade. Participants must submit their entries by Friday, January 6, 2023. Visit the appropriate contest section to learn more about how your child can take part: 


PreK to Grade 2 Category Details

Children in PreK through Grade 2 who wish to participate, should watch this educational YouTube video to find out what vaccines are and how they can help you to not get sick. 

After the video is complete, a parent or guardian should confirm the completion of this task through our Google Survey by Friday, January 6, 2023 to enter their child into the contest. The Google Survey has 7 short questions and should take under a minute to complete.

Participants who submit the survey before the deadline will be entered into a random drawing to win a prize. Three winners will be selected. The prizes that participants can win are as follows: 

  • Prize 1: Mini Indoor Basketball Hoop
  • Prize 2: Soccer Kit (includes a mini net, ball & pump)
  • Prize 3: Crayola Ultimate Light Board for Drawing & Coloring


Grades 3-5 Category Details

Children in Grade 2 through Grade 5 who wish to participate, should create a poster (11” x 17” or 8.5” x 11”) or a short, typed essay (between 150-250 words) bout one of the topics below. Posters may include 3D elements.

  • Prompt 1: Who was Edward Jenner and how did he discover the smallpox vaccine? Please include three or more facts about Jenner and his scientific discovery.  
  • Prompt 2: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you? Students might discuss the experience of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, describe what it has been like to attend school during the pandemic, or how hard it might have been visiting (or not being able to visit) vulnerable friends or family.
  • Prompt 3: What are some things you and your friends do or could do to help prevent the spread of COVID-19? List three or more things.

Participants can submit their entries as an email attachment sent to Immunizations@co.whatcom.wa.us, dropped off in-person or received by mail by Friday, January 6, 2023. Projects that are mailed should be delivered to Attn: Immunizations Team, 509 Girard Street, Bellingham, WA 98225. Projects that are dropped-off should be delivered to one of our identified drop-off locations. Submissions that are incomplete or not received by this time will not be considered.  A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place winner will be selected. Judging will take into consideration the creator’s age.  The prizes that participants can win are as follows:

  • First Place: Slam Ball Game
  • Second Place: Mini Indoor Basketball Hoop
  • Third Place: Crayola Ultimate Light Board for Drawing & Coloring


Grades 6-8 Category Details

Children in Grade 2 through Grade 5 who wish to participate should imagine that they are making an educational flyer or handout for their doctor’s office. Pick one of the vaccines included on the You Call the Shots web-based training courses and create a poster (11” x 17” or 8.5” x 11”) or typed journal entry (between 300-400 words) on the importance of receiving this particular vaccine. Students may also choose to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine. Original works must include at least four facts about the vaccine and the benefits of receiving it.

Participants can submit their entries as an email attachment sent to Immunizations@co.whatcom.wa.us, dropped off in-person or received by mail by Friday, January 6th, 2023. Projects that are mailed should be delivered to Attn: Immunizations Team, 509 Girard Street, Bellingham, WA 98225. Projects that are dropped-off should be delivered to one of our identified drop-off locations. Submissions that are incomplete or not received by this time will not be considered.  A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place winner will be selected. Judging will take into consideration the creator’s age.

  • First Place: Regal Cinema Movie Tickets – 4 tickets
  • Second Place: Summit Trampoline Park – 2 tickets
  • Third Place: Slam Ball Game


Grades 9-12 Category Details

Teenagers in Grade 9 through Grade 12 who wish to participate should respond to respond to the following prompt:

  • Learn about Maurice Hilleman and then write a 500-600 word essay that answers the question: “How would the world be different if Dr. Maurice Hilleman had not lived the life he did?”

Participants can submit their entries as an email attachment sent to Immunizations@co.whatcom.wa.us, dropped off in-person or received by mail by Friday, January 6th, 2023. Projects that are mailed should be delivered to Attn: Immunizations Team, 509 Girard Street, Bellingham, WA 98225. Projects that are dropped-off should be delivered to one of our identified drop-off locations. Submissions that are incomplete or not received by this time will not be considered.  A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place winner will be selected. Judging will take into consideration the creator’s age.

  • First Place: $50 Think Local First Gift Card/other gift card & a copy of the book “Vaccinated: One Man’s Quest to Defeat the World’s Deadliest Diseases” by Paul A. Offit, M.D.
  • Second Place: $30 Think Local First Gift Card/other gift card & a copy of the book “Vaccinated: One Man’s Quest to Defeat the World’s Deadliest Diseases” by Paul A. Offit, M.D.
  • Third Place: $15 Think Local First Gift Card/other gift card & a copy of the book “Vaccinated: One Man’s Quest to Defeat the World’s Deadliest Diseases” by Paul A. Offit, M.D.
