Free Tire Recycling Event for Whatcom County Residents!

Whatcom County Health Department and Public Works Department are sponsoring a free tire recycling event for Whatcom County residents!

  • Residents can drop off up to 15 tires for free, with or without rims.
  • Tires will be accepted Saturdays, October 16th and 23rd, from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
  • The event will take place at the Cedarville Drop Box Facility & Recycling Center, 3463 Cedarville Road.

*No Tractor tires, large truck tires, or tires from businesses are allowed.

Organizers are focusing on recycling tires from residents who live “up-river;” those in the 98220, 98244, 98247 and 98266 zip codes. But the event is open to anyone with proof of Whatcom County residency.

Directions: take Mount Baker Highway to Cedarville Road near Nugent’s Corner. Go north on Cedarville Road for about 1/4-mile to the Cowden Gravel & Ready Mix plant at 3463 Cedarville Road. The recycling center is straight through the Cowden plant and up the hill.

People with over-sized tires or businesses desiring information on disposal options may call Whatcom County Health at 360-778-6033.

Disposal of Solid Waste
Although we have no open landfills in Whatcom County we currently lease property to 3 separate transfer stations at Birch Bay, Cedarville, and Point Roberts. A 4th site on private property in Lynden is open to the public. Disposal of solid waste is carried out by private enterprise by 3 separate haulers through agreements with the county.

Closed Landfill Monitoring

Through contract, the closed Cedarville and Y Road landfills have ongoing programs for ground and surface water monitoring and gas monitoring. Cedarville has leachate collection removal and disposal. This is done to comply with state/federal/local guidelines for closed landfill sites and to ensure that proper procedures are carried out to minimize any potential county liability due to previous public waste disposal services being provided.
