BELLINGHAM, WA – Two Whatcom County Public Works employees were hospitalized with serious injuries after they were struck by an SUV Tuesday, July 20. Both employees were working on the shoulder of the northbound lane of Lummi Shore Drive when a southbound vehicle crossed the center line, struck the guard rail, struck the employees, and then crashed into the parked Public Works vehicle head-on. These employees followed safety procedures when setting up their work zone and were not on the roadway when the incident happened. One employee was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday evening, the other was held overnight for observation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with these men, their families, those who responded to the accident, our County Government family, and others affected by this,” said Public Works Director Jon Hutchings. “I ask that the public and the media give these employees and their families privacy during this challenging time.”
The Public Works Department is a close-knit group and employees are being offered emotional support and assistance. The department will conduct a full investigation. All evidence shows that the employees followed safety procedures before being struck by the vehicle.
